In the face of what they perceived as an unwinnable status contest, these young men believed that only drastic measures would get them the attention and recognition they craved.

It’s interesting to contrast these anonymous mass shootings with how men in criminal gangs operate. When gang members kill, they usually kill one or two targeted people, not a random group of bystanders. Because a perpetuator of gang-related violence has a small, intimate group to which he belongs, his status as a man is on a much firmer foundation than the loner young man who feels he’s constantly belittled. The gangland killer doesn’t need to kill dozens of random people to feel like an “alpha.”
